I hope you didn’t read the title and say it this way,
“I know I have to control my diabetes. Experiences with exercise? Yuck!!!”
I began to exercise when I took my diabetes seriously. I knew as a diabetic, I needed to help my blood arteries, cholesterol and blood pressure. This means doing cardio! (cardiovascular exercise)
When I first started to exercise, I went to a gym and couldn’t do 2 minutes on a stationary bike! Through the months and years that passed, I developed e-n-d-u-r-a-n-c-e!
The problem for a diabetic is to not let exercise cause low blood sugars. I was always determined to workout and get my heart rate above the recommended 70%. (This means I didn’t walk slowly, bike slowly, or talk to another gym members and ignoring the workout.)
To this day, controlling my blood sugar level during strenuous workouts is very hard for me!! There have been many times when my sugar gets too low for me to exercise and I must slow down or stop. In times past, I have had some really low sugar numbers in the 40′s and 50′s during my exercise!
Before exercising, I have learned I need to suspend my pump and raise my sugar level because I workout so hard! I also make sure to eat a little of some healthy carbs. (carbohydrates) I am NOT saying this needs to be done with all diabetics!! Let me repeat that for those skimming this article! I am NOT saying you need to do what I do. It works for me and I workout hard! Check with your Doctor and follow his recommendations.
These are my diabetes experiences! How do you handle not getting low sugars when you exercise?
And if you don’t exercise, get off your seat and take a hike!!
