One of my least favorite parts of type 1 diabetes is counting carbs and insulin. Imagine. Most everything you put into your mouth has at least 1 calorie. Most diabetics count carbohydrates to determine how much sugar is going into their blood stream.
I remember long ago when I was giving myself insulin shots, I would give 4-6 shots a day! Now that I have an insulin pump, I can eat whenever I want since I can tell my pump to give me more insulin. But it can still be an issue since I need to know how much sugar I am digesting to be able to adjust my insulin levels accordingly.
- Want to eat a couple of carrots?…How many carbs is that?
- Want to drink a glass of milk?…How many carbs is that?
- Want popcorn at the movies?…How many carbs is that?

I’ll confess when I buy groceries, many times I like to get food that has the carbs already figured out. That way I can measure the amount of food, tell my pump wizard and it’ll figure out how much insulin I need. And it’s the easiest way to keep your glucose levels within the range of 100 to 140.
I have also become a carb counting expert. I can usually estimate pretty closely to how many carbs a food has. It does get complicated when someone makes a dish of food and I have no clue what it’s made of!!
Are you a diabetic? How are you doing with your carb counting and insulin levels? I’d love to hear from you. Leave a comment or send me an email and share your diabetic experiences!
