Do you want to relate with someone who gets low blood sugars? (Being hypoglycemic) Diabetes mellitus can be scary and life-threatening ~ especially if you are a type 1 diabetic and take insulin on a regular basis.
This week I had a low blood sugar and did not have access to my blood sugar meter. Since I was sitting, I did not get typical symptoms which includes sweating or feeling really weak. (Normally that is a sure sign to get sugar and drink some orange juice or suspend my insulin pump.)

My neck was achy, tight, and feeling heavy like a head cold. I knew something wasn’t right with my body. I can relate the feeling to stress or tension ~ and that is what I thought it might be. When my husband and I were getting ready to leave for home, I stood up and suddenly started to suspect that my sugar level was low. At this point the words out of my mouth were slow. Kind of like a person who has had a stroke. My feet, my legs, my brain, my eyes, my words….everything felt like it was moving in slow motion. I told my husband I thought my sugar was low. A person can’t think clearly nor can they always tell their sugar is low!! Diabetics who are experiencing a hypoglycemic episode aren’t functioning to their full capacity in order to grasp they have a problem. When I got to the car, my sugar level tested in the 50′s. At that point, I suspended my insulin pump, took a glucose tablet and laid my head against the seat.
With diabetes, hypoglycemic situations can occur at any time! Make sure you test your blood sugar on a regular basis! Growing up, I had a lot of problems while I was sleeping. I saw the paramedics many times in the morning. Now I think I might have lost a few of my brain cells from these occasions! At least I have an excuse!
Have diabetes? What are your hypoglycemic experiences?
