Diabetic traveling can be a real pain! :) Most people can pick up and go, but not a diabetic! Oh no….we need to travel with all our diabetic testing equipment, insulin  tools and glucose tablets or some form of sugar in case we have a problem.

You gotta love this cartoon in regard to diabetic traveling.

Diabetic Cartoon by Diabetes Health

I remember one time being at the airport and looking for my blood sugar glucose meter to check my sugar level. My husband and I were waiting for our flight and as I opened up the zipped bag,  I gasped loudly! My bottle of testing strips was missing! Oh nooo!!!! How was I going to live through this vacation without diabetic testing strips? A lady sitting next to us heard my gasp and stepped into the conversation.

“Pardon, me Ms. I overheard your conversation. Do you want to use my glucose meter?”

A sigh of relief came from me and I said “Thank you, God!” I checked my blood sugar, which was fine, but I was still very concerned about my predicament. The lady suggested I pick up a cheap $10 meter from Walgreens that would contain a small bottle of test strips that I could use during my 5 days vacation. In this case, that was cheaper then trying to get more test strips from my insurance company. (A whole other post I can write about! lol) And that is what I did! As soon as the plane landed, we stopped at a CVS and found an inexpensive meter that included sample test strips for $10!

The bottom line is that a check list for diabetic traveling is great to have. I double check in the car. My husband goes through the check list just as the cartoon reveals!!  :)

Get organized and be prepared for your diabetic traveling!
