Do you have diabetes? Experiences as a child can be difficult since most kids prefer to fit in with the crowd. I was six when I found out I had type 1 diabetes! I am sure for some children and even adults, today it is still embarrassing to let others know you have this medical condition called “Diabetes Mellitus.”
One of my diabetes experiences that I can remember was trying to hide carrying the instrument used to check up sugar level. At that time, it was a glass tube that you squeezed urine into and dropped a tablet into. The color result would let you know where your sugar level was. We normally kept it in the bathroom. As a child, what was on MY mind was how to keep from looking different from everyone else!
I love this cartoon! I am sure those of you who have diabetes can relate to some degree!

But what a difference 40 years later!
The glucose monitor (what I have always called my sugar checker) is also a cool looking electronic gadget very small with skins to match whatever you wear. Today there are many type of instruments to use to prick yourself. As a child, there was only one method. Today? You can prick yourself in many locations in addition to researching new methods! My glucose monitor is linked to my insulin pump and it makes beeps and interesting sounds. Most everyone thinks it is a business gadget!
Today, if you are a diabetic (type 1 or type 2) you have the ability to fit in with a crowd and not look like an “odd ball.” Medical technology and diabetic research are finding improvements and looking for a cure for diabetes!
