Bret Michaels and diabetes have been in the spotlight lately! Bret Michaels is a type 1 diabetic who is also lead singer for the heavy metal band Poison. He has been well known in the music world but after being on NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice and winning, his great personality was revealed. Being a musician, Bret Michaels is a team player and very creative. On Celebrity Apprentice, his determination and gusto is seen when one show he comes back from a concert with an hour sleep and still does his part on his team. Another time his zeal helps him to run up and down the stairs with some large photographs.

As a type one diabetic myself, I see a similarity that is probably a reality with all of us. Type one diabetics have learned to have a determination that is to “do or die” I think it’s largely because of low sugars we have gone through in our life when you grow weak, perhaps a little irritable, and your sense of awareness is highly affected. In serious low blood sugars, you lose conscious. That said, as a diabetic, you learn to get focused to meet goals and get to where you are trying to go. (Like to the refrigerator to get some orange juice!)

In the news, most people learned Bret went through and is still going through medical problems and has the will to fight and survive. Bret Michael’s cause is giving American Diabetic Association $390,000 to continue to find a cure for diabetes!
